Pet Training & Toys Guide: Skills, Tricks & Playtime
Pet care isn’t just about feeding and grooming. Once your companion reaches a base friendship level, the Training System opens up — and it’s the difference between a pet that just sits there and one that herds your farm animals, wins weekend races, and digs up hidden treasure. Toys are the core mechanic: different toys train different stats, and the right toy rotation turns a common pet into a specialized tool.
This guide covers every training stat, toy type, skill unlock, and training strategy — for cats, dogs, and all companion pets.
Unlocking Pet Training
Training unlocks through the pet friendship system. You can’t train a pet you just adopted.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Base Pet Unlock | D.G. Guild Level 12 (see Pet Care Unlocks Guide) |
| Training Unlock | Reach Friendship Level 3 with any pet |
| NPC Contact | Talk to Oak-Oak at the Forest Reserve after hitting Friendship Lv.3 |
| Training Ground | Oak-Oak unlocks a Training Yard on your home plot (free, instant) |
Pet Stats & What They Affect
Every pet has three trainable stats, plus two passive traits determined at adoption or breeding:
| Stat | Trained By | Affects |
|---|---|---|
| Obedience | Command toys (whistle, clicker) | Pet responsiveness during herding, racing, and Guard duty |
| Agility | Chase toys (balls, frisbees) | Movement speed in races, dodge chance in combat, evasion in treasure hunts |
| Stamina | Endurance toys (treadmill, obstacle course) | How long a pet can perform active roles before tiring (races, expeditions) |
Passive Traits (Breeding-Determined)
| Trait | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Herd Instinct | +20% effectiveness during Ranch Duty | Border Collie, Australian Shepherd (innate); other breeds via breeding |
| Treasure Nose | +15% chance to find rare items during walks | Retriever breeds, Corgi (innate); trainable via Scent Toys |
| Racer’s Heart | +10% base speed in all races | Greyhound, Siamese Cat (innate); boosted by Agility training |
| Guardian Spirit | +25% damage reduction during combat Guard | Large breeds (innate); boosted by Obedience training |
For breeding these traits into your pets, see the Pet Breeding Guide.
Toy Types & Stat Training
Toys are crafted at Builder Bob’s Workshop (Crafting Lv.3+) or purchased from Oak-Oak’s shop. Each toy type targets a specific stat. Training sessions last 2 in-game minutes per toy and consume 1 Pet Energy (restored daily at 6 AM, max 3 Energy per pet).

| Agility Hoop | Chase | Agility +6 | 5 Wood + 3 Iron + 2 Rubber | 350 Gold | 2 | All pets, mid-tier |
Daily Training Routine
With 3 Pet Energy per day, the optimal daily cycle is:
- Morning (6 AM): 1× Chase Toy → +5-8 Agility
- Afternoon (2 PM): 1× Command Toy → +3-5 Obedience
- Evening (8 PM): 1× Endurance Toy → +7-10 Stamina
This spreads stat gains across all three attributes evenly. For specialized pets (pure racers, pure herders), stack all 3 Energy into the relevant stat.

Training Strategies by Pet Role

Toy Durability & Replacement
Toys wear out. Each use reduces durability by 1 point. When durability hits 0, the toy breaks and must be replaced.
| Toy | Base Durability | Crafted Durability Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Purchased toys | 10-15 uses | N/A |
| Crafted toys (Basic) | 15-20 uses | — |
| Crafted toys (Quality) | 25-30 uses | +10 at Crafting Lv.5 |
| Crafted toys (Masterwork) | 40-50 uses | +20 at Crafting Lv.8 |
Crafting your own toys at Builder Bob’s is always more cost-effective than buying from Oak-Oak. The initial material investment pays off after roughly 15-20 training sessions. See the Crafting & Refining Guide for the full crafting system.
