Tools are your lifeline in Heartopia. Every hobby — fishing, bug catching, bird watching, farming, logging, and mining — depends on a specific tool, and upgrading them is the single biggest power spike you can get. This guide breaks down every tool, its full upgrade tree, costs, and the optimal order to invest your hard-earned Gold.

Tool Overview

Heartopia has six core tools, each tied to a specific activity:

ToolActivityFirst UnlockedUpgrades To

Bug NetBug CatchingD.G. Lv.6 (from Toshi)4 levels
CameraBird WatchingD.G. Lv.6 (from Elara)4 levels

1. Fishing Rod

The fishing rod is your first tool and the one with the most upgrade tiers. Each tier increases catch rate, reduces line-snapping on big fish, and unlocks access to rarer species.

Upgrade Path

LevelNameUnlock RequirementCostKey Benefit
1Bamboo RodD.G. Lv.1 (free from Vanya)FreeCatches Common & Uncommon fish
2Carbon RodFishing Lv.2 + talk to Vanya300 Gold+15% catch rate; can reel Rare fish without snapping
3Reinforced RodFishing Lv.3 + 50 fish caught500 Gold+25% catch rate; Epic fish no longer snap line
4Deep Sea RodFishing Lv.4 + DG Lv.71,000 GoldUnlocks Deep Ocean & Swamp Caves; Legendary fish reduced snap chance
5Golden RodFishing Lv.5 + DG Lv.102,000 Gold+40% catch rate; Legendary fish never snap; +10% Gold from fish sales

Why Each Level Matters

  • Level 2 is the first critical upgrade. Without it, Rare fish like Starlight Eel have a 60% line-snap rate.
  • Level 3 opens up Epic fish (Golden Salmon, Crystal Dace) — these sell for 50-65 Gold each.
  • Level 4 is required for the Moonlight Swordfish (Legendary, 200+ Gold). Don’t attempt Deep Ocean without it.
  • Level 5 eliminates all snap risk. The +10% sell bonus pays for the rod itself after ~100 fish sales.

Upgrade materials for Levels 2-4 are purchased directly from Vanya at Willow Creek. Level 5 requires a Golden Rod Blueprint from Vanya at Best Friend friendship level. See our NPC Gift Guide for friendship strategies.

2. Bug Net

The bug net determines your swing speed, catch radius, and ability to snag fast-moving insects.

Upgrade Path

LevelNameUnlock RequirementCostKey Benefit
1Basic Bug NetD.G. Lv.6 (from Toshi’s quest)FreeStandard catch radius; common/uncommon bugs
2Fast NetBug Catching Lv.2200 Gold40% faster swing recovery; miss window reduced
3Sticky NetBug Catching Lv.3 + 30 bugs caught400 GoldBugs can’t escape on near-miss; +15% catch rate
4Golden NetBug Catching Lv.7 (or Toshi Best Friend)1,500 Gold100% catch rate on Common & Uncommon; Rare bugs never escape

Why Each Level Matters

  • Level 2 (Fast Net) is essential for catching Fireflies and Dragonflies — they’re too fast for the Basic Net.
  • Level 3 (Sticky Net) saves you from the frustration of near-misses. Rare bugs like Atlas Moth are skittish; the Sticky Net gives you a second chance.
  • Level 4 (Golden Net) can be obtained two ways: grind to Bug Catching Lv.7, or reach Best Friend with Toshi for a free one. The Toshi route is faster if you’re already doing daily social rounds.

Alternatively, reach Best Friend with Toshi to receive the Golden Net for free — normally a Level 7 reward. See our NPC Gift Guide for details.

3. Camera

Your camera is essential for bird watching. Higher-tier cameras have longer focal lengths, wider aperture options, and better low-light performance.

Upgrade Path

LevelNameUnlock RequirementCostKey Benefit
1Basic CameraD.G. Lv.6 (from Elara’s quest)FreeStandard zoom; daytime shooting only
2Zoom LensBird Watching Lv.2500 Gold+50% observation range; can shoot from further away
3Pro TelephotoBird Watching Lv.4 + 10 species photographed1,000 Gold+100% zoom; low-light capable (dawn/dusk/night)
4Master’s ScopeBird Watching Lv.6 + 20 species photographed2,500 Gold+200% zoom; night vision; +50% photo Gold value

Why Each Level Matters

  • Level 2 (Zoom Lens) lets you photograph birds from a distance without startling them — crucial for shy species like the Heron.
  • Level 3 (Pro Telephoto) enables dawn and dusk photography, opening up time windows for Kingfisher and Owl Brown.
  • Level 4 (Master’s Scope) includes night vision, which is mandatory for the Moonlight Heron (Legendary, spawns at midnight during full moons). The +50% Gold bonus makes bird photography a serious income source at 120+ Gold/hour.

Free alternative: Reaching Friend level with Elara gives you the Zoom Lens for free. Close Friend unlocks the Silent Step Boots blueprint (reduces bird startle radius by 60%).

4. Axe

The axe is used for logging — chopping trees for wood, rare timber, and clearing paths to new areas.

Upgrade Path

LevelNameUnlock RequirementCostKey Benefit
1Basic AxeD.G. Lv.2 (D.G. quest)FreeChops common trees (Oak, Pine); 5 hits per tree
2Steel AxeLogging Lv.2 + DG Lv.5400 Gold3 hits per tree; can chop Willow trees (Rare Timber source)
3Titanium AxeLogging Lv.4 + DG Lv.81,200 Gold1 hit per common tree; can chop Ancient Trees (Moonstone drops)

Why Each Level Matters

  • Level 2 (Steel Axe) is required to chop Willow Trees at night, which drop Rare Timber — a key material for house expansions and bridge crafting.
  • Level 3 (Titanium Axe) one-shots common trees (massive time saver) and unlocks Ancient Tree chopping in the Deep Forest, which can drop Moonstone (used in high-tier crafting and museum donations).

5. Pickaxe

The pickaxe is used for mining — extracting stone, ore, crystals, and fossils from rock formations.

Upgrade Path

LevelNameUnlock RequirementCostKey Benefit
1Basic PickaxeD.G. Lv.3 (D.G. quest)FreeMines Stone, Iron; finds common fossils (Ammonite, Trilobite)
2Steel PickaxeMining Lv.2 + DG Lv.5500 GoldMines Gold ore; finds uncommon fossils (Ancient Shell, Dinosaur Bone); 2x mining speed
3Titanium PickaxeMining Lv.4 + DG Lv.81,500 GoldMines Flawless Fluorite, Crystal Geode; finds epic/legendary fossils; can break volcanic rock

Why Each Level Matters

  • Level 2 (Steel Pickaxe) unlocks Gold ore mining — a direct income source at 25 Gold per ore. Also required for Beach Cliff fossil hunting.
  • Level 3 (Titanium Pickaxe) is the endgame mining tool. It unlocks Crystal Cave (Crystal Geode, 120 Gold) and the volcanic zones (Moonstone, Phoenix Feather Fossil). The Dragon Skull — the rarest museum fossil — requires this pickaxe and access to the deepest mine level.

For more on mining locations and fossil finds, see our Museum Donation Guide for the complete Fossil Hall checklist.

6. Watering Can

The watering can is used for farming — watering crops to accelerate growth and improve harvest quality.

Upgrade Path

LevelNameUnlock RequirementCostKey Benefit
1Basic CanDay 1 (from Blanc)FreeWaters 1 tile per use; 2 stamina per use
2Copper CanFarming Lv.3 + DG Lv.5350 GoldWaters 3x3 area per use; 5 stamina per use (saves stamina on large fields)
3Iridium CanFarming Lv.5 + DG Lv.81,200 GoldWaters 5x5 area; 8 stamina per use; retains water (fill less often); +10% crop growth speed

Why Each Level Matters

  • Level 2 (Copper Can) is a game-changer for mid-size farms. Instead of watering 20 plots one by one (40 stamina), you water in 3x3 blocks (25 stamina for the same area).
  • Level 3 (Iridium Can) is the ultimate farming tool. The +10% growth speed means carrots go from 2 minutes to 1.8 minutes — over a full field, that’s significant. Reaching Best Friend with Blanc gives you the Golden Watering Can (2x growth speed, same area as Iridium).

The Golden Watering Can is a separate item from the Iridium Can — it’s a Blanc friendship reward, not a purchased upgrade. See our Crop Optimization Guide for farming strategies.

Durability System

Every tool has a durability meter that degrades with use. Here’s how it works:

Durability Basics

ToolMax DurabilityDegrades Per UseRepair Cost
Fishing Rod100 casts-1 per cast (hooked fish)50 Gold at Vanya’s
Bug Net150 swings-1 per swing (hit or miss)30 Gold at Toshi’s
CameraDoes not degrade
Axe200 chops-1 per tree hit40 Gold at Builder Bob’s
Pickaxe200 strikes-1 per rock hit40 Gold at Builder Bob’s
Watering Can300 uses-1 per tile watered20 Gold at Blanc’s

What Happens When Durability Hits Zero

ToolEffect at 0 Durability
Fishing RodCannot cast; line is “too worn”
Bug NetNet tears; cannot swing
AxeBlade dulls; cannot chop
PickaxeHead cracks; cannot mine
Watering CanLeaks; waters only 1 tile regardless of upgrade level

Repair Options

  1. NPC Repair — Visit the associated NPC (Vanya, Toshi, Blanc, or Builder Bob) and pay Gold to fully restore durability. Instant but costs Gold.
  2. Repair Kit — A consumable item that restores 100% durability to any tool. Purchasable at Ka Ching’s Store (100 Gold) or craftable at Crafting Lv.2. Carry 1-2 in your inventory for emergencies.

Pro Tip: Repair Kits are cheaper than NPC repairs for high-durability tools. A Repair Kit (100 Gold) fully fixes a Fishing Rod that would cost 50 Gold per repair at Vanya’s — but it also fixes your Axe, Pickaxe, and Bug Net simultaneously if you switch tools. Always carry one.
